MERCANTILE  MARINE  MEDAL

 




 

 


The Mercantile Marine Medal was awarded to those who received the British War Medal and also served at sea on at least one voyage through a danger zone. The medal was also awarded to those who has served at sea for not less than six moths between 4th August 1914 and 11th November 1918 both dates inclusive. There were no bars awarded for this medal and the medal was awarded by the Board of Trade.

The reverse shows a merchant ship ploughing her way through stormy seas, an enemy submarine sinking and a sailing vessel in the background. The inscription FOR * WAR * SERVICE / MERCANTILE MARINE / * 1914-1918 * appears in three lines. Around the edge or rim are raised laurel leaves. The ribbon is coloured Green, White (thin centre stripe) and Red. This represents the starboard and port running light with the masthead steaming lights in the centre.

Approximately 133,135 medals were issued.
